working through FRUSTRATION đ
As I climb through a tough slab set in this week's vlog, I discuss working through frustration.
We talk: why feeling frustrated is normal, how to move through the feeling, and finding the right amount of challenge for yourself.
Give it a watch!
Here are 3 tips for working through frustration:
1. Adjust your expectations while maintaining the goal of your session
Frustration often comes from a mismatch between how you expect to be performing vs whatâs actually happening. Take a deep breath and meet yourself where youâre at for the day: you canât always be performing at your top level.
Remind yourself of your goal for the session and adjust the level of the climbs youâre getting on to still have a productive practice.
2. Identify and challenge the source of your frustration
Are you feeling frustrated because a voice in your head is telling you that you âshouldâ be able to flash every V3 of the new set?
Now challenge yourself: why should you? Youâve never climbed on this new set, how do you know how youâre âsupposedâ to perform on it?
Take whatâs in front of you for what it is and call out your ego-driven thoughts when they come up.
3. Measure climbs by their challenge level rather than their grade
Sometimes a grade that would typically give you lots of difficulty ends up going down easily. Sometimes that same grade puts up more of a fight than youâd expect.
By reframing to the challenge youâre looking for (ex: âIâm looking for a boulder I can send in 30 minutesâ, or âIâm looking for a long-term projectâ), you can better choose climbs for your sessions.
